The Warriors are greatly loved in this region. Two excellent family nights were organised at the Mercury Bay Game Fishing Club on the last two Saturday evenings, 5 and 12 September, by local resident Kevin Johnson, who was himself a high-level player in his younger days and also President of Auckland Rugby League.
He is quite the Warriors fan. Most came dressed in Warriors jerseys or with green hair, beanies, and scarves. There was a great range of food to order from the restaurant, and people sat together around the two big screens. It was such a fun atmosphere.

Every child received a ticket when they arrived, and the random numbers were drawn just before the games began. The numbers drawn won terrific Warriors prizes.
Of course, tension was high on the first night with such a close-shave win by the Warriors, who finished one point ahead of the Manly Sea Eagles. Happiness was in short supply towards the close of last Saturday’s game, with a loss by the Warriors to the Dolphins.
I am an Aussie but found myself secretly, very quietly, cheering for the Warriors. I didn’t want my phone to overhear in case Australia was listening. However, there is a chance for redemption this coming Sunday at 6.30pm when this beloved Auckland team plays the Newcastle Knights.
Up the Wahs!
