From Canada to Thames: The Family Behind Whitianga’s Unicorn Adventure

Sometimes the most memorable sights in Whitianga arrive on four hooves… or at least appear to.

A family of "unicorns".

Jessie from Canada met Allan her now Kiwi husband in Canada whilst he was there teaching. A sporty couple the Canadian down hill skier fell in love with the Kiwi cricketer and rugby player. Their love brought them Arlowe their daughter. “We came for a holiday and never left – we love New Zealand.” Where has this writer heard that before?

The Unicorn outfits were originally created by a relative in Canada for Halloween. Arlowe wanted to wear them on their day trip to Whitianga.

The Unicorn family live in Thames and had brought their car to be repaired at RDP Panel and Paint. RDP had provided them with amazing customer service and professionalism plus a courtesy car to take them home.

Jessie is an educator and psychology graduate who, has been busy building a new life in Thames with husband Allan; raising their young daughter Arlowe. Jessie is getting involved in local children’s groups; becoming part of and nurturing the kind of community she wants her family to grow up in.

Allan is about to start his training to become a teacher in health and physical education here in New Zealand. Already using his rugby skills, Allan is currently part of the Vixen’s ladies rugby coaching team. The Vixen’s are based in Thames but take players from a number of regions including the Coromandel.

So, having travelled over on the ferry and walked with the Unicorns along front beach to the Eggsentric Café; I was invited to Thames to watch the ladies final match this last Saturday …. so look out for my next story .
