A recent visit to the Thames Market provided a colourful reminder of the creativity and innovation found throughout the Coromandel region.

I had not visited Thames or the Market in a few years. So, with time to spare before the Vixens rugby final at Rhodes Park, Thames. I took a little stroll along Pollen Street before morning tea in Café Melbourne’s sunny court yard.

It’s a real eclectic mix of stalls, home cooked produce, honey, up-cycled and re-cycled, pre-loved and creatively new. The imagination and creativity of the Coromandel never ceases to amaze me – too many to mention so here are my personal top three favourites.

• Mark at Gaia Greenstone, originally came from Israel 25 years ago; his hobby has become a business now. I photographed a beautiful water feature and some of a delicate ink stone collection.

• I just had to return to the retired cabinet maker from Australia now retired to Thames –  Geoff’s Creations the Beautiful Bird houses, home of fairy tales and as Arlowe said Pewakawaka’s (Fantails ) can live in them.

• Last but not least – Alpacca Artistry operated by Paula a full time teacher and Daniel from their lifestyle block. Beautiful soft and warm creations in amazing earth-tone, natural colours. They offer free visits to meet the Alpacca’s, Havana, Lola and Kalani. I must say I am looking forward to meeting the Alpacas at their home in Te Aroha sometime soon.

The re-used plastic bottle top items are all original made by Steve from collected and donated bottle tops….no artifical additives or colourants used in any of the tops.
