Mercury Bay Sailing Regatta

It is the fifth year in a row  that Mercury Bay Boating Club has hosted the Elliott 5.9 Sailing Regatta. The boats come from all over the North Island and love our waters and our town. In fact, so much so, that they have asked to have their national championships in Mercury Bay, 2028. The national regatta was held here 5 years ago and it’s a rare honour that the national organisers  have asked to come back again so soon.

Our small but enthusiastic club has not let the clubhouse issues drag us down and we have put on a great regatta for them, Getting six races away off Cooks Beach on Saturday and four off Buffalo Beach on Sunday despite at times light and shifty winds. Is a great achievement.

Our next regatta is the annual Double Trouble Catamaran contest in November. In the meantime, our local keelboat fleet sails fortnightly and would welcome more boats to join us. It’s very relaxed and you don’t have to be TeamNZ to be in the hunt for victory bragging rights. Our handicap system ensures that everyone has a chance.
