The Whitianga Lions Club is embracing a new chapter under recently elected President Mike Christie, while continuing its long tradition of community service and support throughout Mercury Bay.

Bonnie Roberts and Lily-Ray Threadgold, Fabian Roberts, MBPA Trust President) and Wallace Roberts (far left), receive the gift of $1840.00 from Gordon Barnaby, Whitianga Lions Club Secretary and Dayle Baker, President of the ladies Mercury Bay Lions Club.

You may read Mike’s Minutes each week in The Informer. He lists some You Tube documentaries or short films that are of interest to Mike, that he has watched and recommends.

That is Mike Christie the recently elected president of Whitianga Lions Club 2026-27.

Mike is semi-retired and he and his wife Fatima are very active in our community having spent many  years working in business in the Pacific.

Mike’s message to the Lions Club members and to the community is one of  embracing change,  doing things differently but with the same passion to serve the community. “Bring on those new ideas,” says Mike.

“Welcome to Whitianga” sign

Readers may have spotted the upgraded “Welcome to Whitianga” sign originally funded and built by Whitianga Lions. It is looking very fine in its new ugraded condition and position just a couple of kilometres south of Whitianga. The business Association suggested to Lions an upgrade and thanks to Iron Works Coromandel, it has come to life making a great new landmark welcoming people to Whitianga. Thank you to TCDC for making available a financial contribution for this project.

Surprise helicopter ride

Whilst participating in the recent Daffodil Day Cancer Collection at the Coro Club Café at Whitianga Airport, club secretary Gordon Barnaby mentioned to a helicopter piolet, Shamus of Cook’s Beach, that the last time he had been in a helicopter was 1960. Shortley after, Shamus approached Gordon and said, “how about changing that date to 2026?” So now Gordon can say he has been twice in a helicopter, 1960 and 2026.

Donation to Mercury Bay Performing Arts Trust

The Whitianga Lions Club have brought a great boost to early preparations with their ‘cheque’ of $1,840.  Both Whitianga Lions and Mercury Bay Lions are committed to supporting the growth and development of  the arts for young people across the Eastern Coromandel. On receiving the funds, Fabian Roberts, President of the Trust, said, “I think the support already shown for youth performing arts on the Peninsula is incredible. Thank you to Lions for their generous and active interest and support.

“With the help of our sponsors, supporters and wider community, we were able to deliver an incredible production for our young performers bringing Beauty and the Beast Jr. to life. The quality of the experience, learning and entertainment were a huge step forward from our first production, Aladdin Jr. in 2025. Looking ahead to 2027, we’re excited to announce that our next production will be  Grease Young@Part®, a version of the classic musical specifically tailored for young performers aged 8-18. The production will be staged at the Whitianga Town Hall, with performances beginning 13 May 2027.”

The Trust is seeking further support from local businesses to help us continue delivering high-quality experiences for our young performers and the wider community.
