Council’s Finance and Infrastructure Committee has voted to recommend to Council that the construction of a new pool at Thames High School be included in years 1 to 3 of the 2027-2037 Long Term Plan.
The committee recommended funding to be covered by the Long Term Plan, and for Council to take a strategic approach to aquatic facilities across the district. Specifically, the committee recommended that Council adopt a population-based national benchmark for outside swimming water amenities; thus partial district funding for both capital and operating costs, and has asked staff to develop a funding model that would balance affordability and flexibility for communities across the Coromandel.
Construction of the new Whitianga Wharf pontoon
Good progress is being made on the concrete floating pontoon for Whitianga Wharf, which is being replaced due to its deteriorated condition. The replacement pontoon is currently being built by Heron Construction at its Whangārei yard. The project has reached an important milestone, with engineering inspections completed and the two pontoon sections now successfully poured.
From the first week of September, access to the pontoon will be closed to allow the safe replacement of pontoon and piles. Work in the harbour is expected to take around two weeks.
During construction, a temporary berth will be provided for the ferry.
