Mercury Bay Area School hosted with excitement on Thursday 23 July the New Zealand Science Roadshow, sponsored by the Ministry of Education. Thursday, 23 July was quite exciting for Year 7, 8 and 9 students hosting this day of discovery and fun.

The New Zealand Science Roadshow team engages the Year 7, 8 and 9 students with great interest and involvement at Mercury Bay Area School recently. The Roadshow is touring New Zealand schools.
The popular Science Roadshow gave students the chance to explore a vast range of science ideas through live demonstrations and interactive exhibits. From the moment the sessions began, students were highly engaged, asking questions, testing ideas and eagerly taking part in each activity. The visit created a lively atmosphere as learners moved between displays and shows, discovering that science can be exciting, surprising and relevant to everyday life.
The Roadshow is designed to make science accessible and memorable for students, and this was certainly the case for these students as they enjoyed investigating different areas of science, including topics linked to the natural world, chemistry, human performance, astronomy, movement and more. The hands-on approach meant students were not just watching science happen – they were actively involved in it.
Teachers appreciated that the experience helped spark curiosity across a wide range of scientific ideas and that the Roadshow encouraged students to think, question and explore, giving them a chance to see how science connects to the world around them. They could see that by engaging with practical demonstrations and interactive challenges, their students gained a deeper understanding of how science works and why it matters.
For many of the students, it was a highlight of the school term.
The Science Roadshow continues to be an important educational experience for schools across Aotearoa New Zealand, helping young people build confidence and interest in science through fun, hands-on learning. At Mercury Bay Area School, the day was a great success – Years 7, 8 and 9 students leaving with new knowledge, plenty to talk about, and a stronger appreciation for the many different areas of science.
