Easter Sunday at Kuaotunu Reserve was busy with children and their families setting up their pet rocks for the public to decide which ones they will buy and which one will win the People’s Award. It was Easter Day Pet Rock Day and has been bring the community together for over twenty years.

Many children from the Rudolf Steiner Kindergarten prepare a rock or rocks for this community picnic morning as the kindergarten is the custodian of this event along with its initiator Ursula Gaebler, local resident and retried kindergarten teacher.

Among the children’s entries were some well-known artist contributions such as Annemieke Kregting’s Sleeping Kiwi Bird. When the judging was over  and prizes awarded, the rocks were auctioned off by Rob and Angela Ball of Ball and Co Real Estate. He and Ange have been attending and involving the community in the Fun Auction for many years.

Prices paid don’t always relate to the level of art but in good spirit, locals and visitors are very keen to support the fund-raising for Kuaotunu’s very special Kindergarten. The weather conditions created some indecision as to whether Pet Rock Day would go ahead but it ended up being a great day with a very good result with the funds raised.
