The Coromandel Peninsula buzzed with live music over King’s Birthday weekend, culminating in a lively Legends Night at Mercury Bay Club, where tribute performances and a packed crowd created an unforgettable evening of entertainment.

There were a large number of music events in the communities around the Coromandel Peninsula this Kings Birthday weekend plus several programs hosted by our local radio station, CFM highlighting and celebrating  the music of New Zealand artists.

These venues were just some  that provided excellent entertainment – Lukes Kitchen in Kuaotunu, Buffalo Beach Club, The Monkey House, Mercury Bay Club with The Legends event and the Duo Hanna Sharps and Phil Hunt performing at Smittys Bar and Grill, plus Saturday night’s mini-concert from Phil Hart at Grace O’Malleys Irish Inn.

Phil Hart who is a local chartered accountant when he is not singing and playing the guitar, has consistently sponsored local artists to have exposure around the Coromandel Peninsula so a big shout out to him.

A legendary night

The Legends Night at Mercury Bay Club last Sunday evening was perhaps the biggest investment in providing a local music event. Well done to their organising committee with Roger Simpson coordinating the event and to  Chef Nee and his MB Club Restaurant for the fine meals enjoyed before and during the show.  Over 120 people came to experience music tributes to Neil Diamond, Engelbert Humperdinck, Elvis Presley and Queen of Country music – Dolly Parton, Nancy Sinatra, Loretta Lyynn and more.

Three professional performing artists did all of this in style – giving a great tribute show and had the crowd dancing and singing along late into the night – Trevor Needham, Jannine Douglas and Suzie Shrimpton. The Legends trio perform internationally with a lot of gigs in Australia as well as the major cities in New Zealand. Whitianga was fortunate to have them come.
