Local filmmaker Wayne Johnson was working on his documentary, “Will It Fly” (about Richard Pearse and his flying machine) when he first met Sergeant Dean Hart. Dean approached him and declared he was working on something he thought Wayne would find interesting; – “I’m building a jet car”.
That was all the invitation Wayne needed. Fascinated by cars, planes, and the engineering that makes them work, he’s equally intrigued by the people who devote themselves to building machines that are as exhilarating as they are dangerous. So he headed to Dean’s shed to see it for himself.
There he found a typical Kiwi bloke in a shed – the slight difference being the shed was filled with the makings of a top fuel drag car with a jet engine, and had to go in on an angle because that’s the only way it would fit!
There was obviously a story here, and it soon became clear that it wasn’t just about building the car, but Dean’s dream of breaking the New Zealand land speed record.
For the next 5 years, Wayne kept popping back and forth to document Dean’s dream as it took shape. You only have to spend 5 minutes with Wayne to feel his immense affection for the project, his respect for Dean, as well as Wayne’s knack for telling a story.
Trash 2 Dash is that story, and MTC-Mercury Twin Cinemas, Whitianga is proud to host a week of screenings, commencing Thursday, 6 August. Don’t miss your chance to see this incredible chapter of New Zealand history as it unfolded.
