The promotional line for this year’s Doc Edge Documentary Festival, ‘F#&k the Algorithm’, is much more than just an edgy eye catcher.
We are all held captive by algorithms, fed a diet of what the metaverse thinks we want to see … based on data it’s managed to garner from our random online interactions.
That’s why the documentary festival is so important to me. It breaks through the algorithms and offers raw, truthful, uncensored takes on an extraordinarily broad range of topics … some will challenge us, many will broaden our minds, and they may even change us for the better.
This is Doc Edge’s twenty first festival. Over the years it has garnered international respect for the range of its offerings, its integrity and its courage. It will play documentaries that some may rather you didn’t see, offering deeply personal insights into some of the world’s major conflicts, issues, corporations and characters.
What is it really like for the doctors and journalists working in Gaza, or for women activists in Iran? Find out how far Elon Musk is prepared to go to make a profit. Follow a father’s intimate ten-year journey as he raises a child with severe developmental challenges, or join a Maori astronomer as he takes indigenous knowledge to the frozen continent.
Doc Edge is an Oscar qualifying festival, in fact one of last year’s offerings, ‘Mr Nobody against Putin’, won the Oscar for best documentary.
The best news is that you can now see these films from the comfort of your own home. The festival is accessible online until Monday, 10 August.
Visit docedge.nz. I would hate you to miss it. See the stories too real for the algorithm.
