Whitianga Art Group Feature Artist

Marianne will be at the Featured Artist Exhibition on Saturdays and Waitangi Day 10.00am to 4.00pm and Sunday, February 11 and 25 from 10 am to 2pm

The Whitianga Art group is a casual, friendly group of people who love art, who are very good at art and together they work with a wide variety of different styles and mediums. Margaret Gibson does wonderful scenes in acrylic paints while Merle Ward [who arrives on her scooter] produces fabulous oil and cold wax abstracts, as well as some acrylic art. Jackie Chatfield does stylised portraits and birds in acrylic paints on canvas, while Jenny Cotterell is known for her dot work and stylised/abstract acrylic paintings, to name just a few. They meet Thursdays and Fridays and usually share lunch and stories at midday with some Evakona Education language students coming in on a Friday afternoon to try their hand at creating art pieces. (See Evakona Education article on page 15)

The Whitianga Art Group also runs regular courses for nominal fees, having some members sharing their experience. The membership is growing too. Everyone is welcome to visit Thursday and Friday between 10.00am and 4.00pm when members meet to paint and chat each week.

I moved to Whitianga from Auckland in 2015, with my husband Tony Moyes, who was born and bred here,” says Marianne. “Initially I tried my hand at stone carving, but one day my son shared some photos of me that he had taken while hunting deer, and I decided I wanted to paint. I began painting in acrylics and haven’t looked back. I joined the Whitianga Art Group in 2021 and was one of the eight members of the group’s entry into the Mercury Bay Art Escape in 2023. The Whitianga Art Group is exhibiting again with Mercury Bay Art Escape in the first two weekends in March 2024.  I will be exhibiting my newest work as part of this exhibition and am very much looking forward to it.
