Two wonderful Santa parades

Wishing you a Merry Coro Christmas

BY MICHELLE DELABARCA

It felt like the whole town turned up on Sunday afternoon to celebrate the festive season and welcome Santa to Coromandel Town. The main street was lined with smiling faces and excited children, scrambling for lollies. Babies, toddlers, kids, teens, Mums and Dads, right through to golden oldies all gathered to enjoy the 20 plus floats including an amazing selection of classic cars. Even the dogs came in fancy dress! “It was the most people I’ve seen since since I have been here, “ says Coromandel 4 Square owner, Chris Beard.

Prizes were given for floats in several categories with Best Business going to Over the Fence’s Safari Santa, Most Creative going to Coromandel Garden Centre, Best Community float to Grey Power and the Peoples’ Choice was Coromandel Area School and Pre-school. Best boy costume went to little Tangaroa French in his remotely controlled car and Best dressed girl went to Amilia (and her Nanna). Best Adult was Ryan Visser who was dressed as a Christmas Lion!

A big ‘thank you’ to Shevana Davies and Danielle Dudson, well-known locals who are involved with both the Preschool and Play Centre. “We decided to organise the parade when we realised that no one had stepped up this year. Taking part in Christmas Parades gave us happy childhood memories and we wanted Coro kids to have the same opportunity.” Congratulations to both women, who managed – in just 4 weeks, to recruit sponsors, floats, live music, a market and foodstalls and create a happy festive vibe in town.

Shevana wants to thank the 20 plus local sponsors especially G D Haulage, Coromandel Underwater and Jenna James Photography. A special mention to James Drainage who closed the road yet again, but this time for a very special occasion! We don’t mind this stop/go!
