As part of our Year 10 Mana Aki class at Mercury Bay Area School, we helped to organise and set-up a skate competition on Saturday, 5 June (Queen’s Birthday Weekend Saturday).

The event was held at the local Whitianga skatepark and we estimate that between 300 - 400 people watched or took part in competition between 1:00pm and 4.30pm. We were able to raise $642.20 to go towards lights at the skatepark.

There were heaps of great prizes that went to skaters or people who donated money on the day, including a Powell Peralta skateboard and Santa Cruz socks from Harry and Her, a Globe skateboard deck, Grizzly grip tape, gold bearings from Black Jack Surf, and several helmets and hydration backpacks from the Bike Man.

We also raised money from a sausage sizzle that contributed over $250 to the total that was raised. The sausages were generously donated by Whitianga Butchery and were super tasty. We would like to thank all our sponsors and we would also like to thank Thames-Coromandel District Council and the Mercury Bay Skatepark Trust for helping us out.

Lastly, a huge thanks to all the participants who came to our skate competition, it would not have been possible without you guys.

The competition winners were Taj Lorimer (12 and under), Tony Wells (Under 15) and Flynn Wells (Open Division).
