The Ohuka Garden Club is offering an opportunity for community members to join a new community orchard project in Whitianga, with the Council providing trees and ongoing support needed.

The Ohuka Garden Club

Calling all lovers of fruit, orchards, community gatherings and herbal plantings.

The Ohuka Garden Club has been offered the opportunity of planting up a community orchard on a block in Cook Drive, Whitianga. We are looking for interested gardeners and community members to help us with planting days, care of the fruit trees and herbs and vegetables in the long term.

The Council is buying us the trees and we have prepared a list of fruit trees that we know will work. Any amount of time volunteers are available to look after our little trees with mulching and a bit of digging would be greatly appreciated.

A community orchard is not just for fruit trees to  grow but for a food supply to exist, for educational purposes for the next generation to learn about the care of fruit trees and how our food is grown.   Also we don’t know when in the future we will need to grow our own food.

We had our first planting in August last year and have harvested the first season of feijoas this week. They were delicious!

This is an expression of interest at the moment.  When we have some interested community gardeners, we can set up a meet and greet day.
