Specialist rope-access crews made good progress while the settled weather held last week. This photo was taken on day 3 of inspecting the steep cliff faces above the state highway and removing loose or unstable rock where needed.
This rock scaling work helps reduce the risk of rockfall and keeps this important route between Waikato, Bay of Plenty and the Coromandel safer, more reliable and more resilient.
SH2 Karangahake Gorge was closed from 9am to 4pm each day until Friday 28 August. This round of road closures was for inspection and any immediate, smaller rock removal. The crews will be back for a second lot of work from Monday 12 to Friday 16 October, where they will remove larger unstable rock and complete any further work identified during the inspections.
