Important conversations about water

The lake wasn’t too large; the dam was sufficient but not drowning all the valley. It had become a place of leisure, education, community play and also energy and irrigation production. The drought of recent years; the need for combining resources, the motion of rainfall, storing it and treating it for times of both scarcity and plenty are all challenges before us. In addition, using water for energy generation and paying for water are to be added. This visit to the very peasant Queensland dam and its lake prompted me to make a mini video raising some of these water matters and upload it …

Community Constable’s visit proves to be a big hit

Constable  Johnny Ngauamo with the students at Evakone Education Centre enjoying their road safety lesson. (This was a little fun just for the camera – there were no cars coming.) Overseas students learn to cross the road safely with local police Evakona Education Centre is situated next to the Mercury Bay Area School in South Highway. “Students being aware of local customs and rules outside of the classroom, are matters the Evakona Education Centre takes very seriously. The feedback from the community is welcomed and appreciated,” says Teresa Thompson, Teacher and Homestay Co-ordinator….

TCDC slams door on Open Government Reform

TCDC is now glaringly out of step on this issue, with councils as nearby as Matamata-Piako District Council and as large and complicated as Auckland Council having altered their policies in favour of open workshops. At their June 27 meeting, TCDC councillors voted 4-3, with little debate, to reject recommendations for increased transparency from both the NZ Chief Ombudsman and senior TCDC governance staff.

Today’s danger – Issue Three, Environment Matters

The precautions taken for those involved with a 1080 drop are considerable – clearly exposure to 1080 is harmful to humans. Past practice Poisoned baits land in a stream, the poison leaches out and the waterways downstream will flow with 1080. Landowners rely on that water which they drink, which their animals drink, and with which they water their veggie gardens. They would get a visit prior to the drop from DoC to warn them there would be a flow of poison through their land following the drop. All the water up-take taps were turned off prior and water samples were taken after the drop…

World Heritage status – What Does It Mean To Us?

We may not be able to dictate the future of the entire Hauraki Gulf but it is time to set a standard and protect the greater Mercury Bay Area. “The Great Bay of Hei”. Hopefully, our actions may be followed by others. DETERMINED to move forward, to protect and preserve our heritage for future generations, we returned to the UNESCO World Heritage Convention New Zealand website. Globally there are 1,121 World Heritage Sites, both Cultural and Natural. Each has had to satisfy at least one of ten possible selection criteria, adjudicated by the World Heritage Committee. That selection criter…

South Island Tour and poisons

Malcolm Campbell at home on his Waihi farm. Having resided in the Waikato Region all of my life, I was able to compare the South Island land areas to that of the Waikato.   It is patently obvious that all Councils, both regional and district, believe that all problems can be solved by first, Council Control and secondly, by treating every problem with poison. The May 30th Southland Express, Page 3, features a display by Environment Southland quote: “World Environment Day will be held on 5 June, with one of the key themes being land restoration. Restoring land can produce a range of benefi…

Local response to difficulties with primary care health funding

The Mercury Bay Medical Centre the night before it opened in July 2023. Workforce is always a challenge. We recognise our community’s desire to have a regular doctor that they know well. We hope the information in the media and this article puts into perspective how difficult it is for practices to find and retain GP’s. As this press release highlights, the shortage of GP’s is a nationwide issue and we, as a practice, have been working hard to find highly skilled practitioners to work alongside our GP’s.
