After losing six close family members to cancer, Dr Kevin Pringle continues to support Dry July and the people affected by the disease. His story is a powerful reminder of why fundraising for cancer support services matters to families throughout New Zealand.

Local retired paediatric surgeon and medical researcher Dr Kevin Pringle is taking part in Dry July once again after losing six family members to cancer, including his wife Carol, who died from leukaemia in 2022.

Now 78, Kevin has spent much of his life caring for others as a doctor, but cancer has touched his own family repeatedly. He has lost his wife, parents and four brothers to the disease and says he is the only sibling who has not been diagnosed with cancer.

Kevin has continued supporting the campaign since 2023 because he understands firsthand the impact cancer has on individuals and families.

“Every 22 minutes, someone in New Zealand is diagnosed with cancer and, in July alone, more than 2,200 Kiwis will hear that news. Funds raised through Dry July help provide practical, non-medical support services for people affected by cancer, including rehabilitation, support groups and wellbeing programmes.”
