Living in Whitianga clinched – let’s open a restaurant here!

Whitianga has many restaurants, but Arvind Parshad felt there was room for one more. This idea was not based on a whim or the advice of a Business Management Consultant. It was based on Arvind and his family’s experience of living and working in Whitianga. “Whitianga is a great town with so many friendly people and it will grow”, says Arvind.

‘Indian Aromas’ Indian and Thai Restaurant – 59 Albert St, Whitianga

This is Arvind’s first business. His knowledge of the town and its businesses comes from living here. His nephew, Nikhil Chamoli, who is often in the role of manager as well as reception in the restaurant, went to school here. He graduated from the Mercury Bay Area School and is now undertaking a civil engineering degree in Auckland. Arvind has two children, 10 and 13 years attending the Mercury Bay Area School. He cut his teeth on working in Whitianga by spending a year baking in Countdown. Previously, he had learnt the restaurant business in Tauranga where for three years he worked in one of the local restaurants. Arvind is from India where his home was Chandigarh.

The premises of ‘Indian Aromas’ is smart and modern. The staff are friendly and attentive. Their menu has two parts – Indian and Thai – the customers choose.  Their prices are moderate.

The food is very tasty and the sauces smooth with lots of choices both on the Indian menu and the Thai menu.  I enjoyed very much two favourites – chicken sate and chicken korma with naan bread.  I could see that the vegetarian choices were extensive and staff were very willing to assist me.

Since opening this summer, business has been brisk to hectic. Arvind is wide awake to the fact that when colder weather comes, many of his customers will leave Whitianga. He has a plan to sustain the business all through the year. As with many others, he believes that the best thing about the town and district is the people. He is confident he can build a sustainable business in this warm and welcoming community.
