Have you ever thought about getting a few chickens for fresh eggs? Over the month of May, we’ll be exploring what’s involved in keeping chickens and how to get started.

Hi, I’m Marlene, owner of MB Meadow Munchers. Through supplying feed and chatting with locals, I’ve met plenty of “chicken tenders”, some just starting out, others who’ve had chooks for as long as they can remember. I’m by no means an expert, but I’ve picked up a lot along the way from personal experiences, research and good conversations.

If you’re thinking about getting chickens, you are not alone. It’s something more and more people around the Peninsula are considering and it’s easy to see why. Fresh eggs on hand, less food waste, and a few feathered characters wandering around the yard, it’s a win-win situation, right? Chickens can be surprisingly entertaining and quickly become part of the family and daily routine.

One thing worth mentioning early on, keeping chickens isn’t about saving money on eggs. Once you factor in feed and a basic setup, it tends to even out. But what you do gain is knowing exactly where your eggs come from and how your hens are treated, that is worth a lot!

But before you rush out and buy a few chooks, it is worth taking a step back and thinking it through. Do you have enough space for a coop and run? Chickens don’t need a huge area, but they do need somewhere safe and sheltered. A secure, dry coop will keep them comfortable and protected from predators, room to scratch around will keep them happy.

They’re a fairly easy routine, fresh water, feed, and a quick check each day is usually all it takes. It’s not time-consuming, but it is worth considering if you’re often away or have a full schedule. Chickens are very rewarding to keep, and a little planning early on makes all the difference.

Next week, we’ll look at the local regulations, choosing the right breed and setting up a coop that works for you and your hens.
