Successful regatta returns to Mercury Bay

Next weekend (Saturday 18 and Sunday, 19 June), the Mercury Bay Boating Club (MBBC) will be hosting another regional regatta.

“We will be welcoming the Elliot 5.9 Association to our Bay once again,” says MBBC commodore, Jonathan Kline. “After last year’s successful Nationals here in Mercury Bay, the Elliot Association added us to their winter Traveller Series and next weekend a fleet of more than 12 boats will be in Whitianga.”

The Elliot 5.9 is a three-person yacht launched from a road trailer. All boats will be based at the Whitianga Marina and will be launched, towed out and retrieved every day. On the water, a volunteer MBBC race management team will be running five to seven races each of the two days, all windward/leeward with a top mark, bear away offset mark and bottom gate.

“These Elliot Sailors are extremely talented sailors,” says Jonathan. “Most are involved with other top Grand Prix programmes during the summer season. The competition will be fierce within the fleet. The Elliot 5.9 teams will be in Whitianga for the whole weekend, enjoying our accommodation, restaurants, and local attractions.”
