After overcoming a challenging period that led to a year-long closure, Mercury Bay Gymnastics Club has successfully re-established itself as a valued part of the local community.

Mercury Bay Gymnastics Club

The Mercury Bay Gymnastics Club is thriving once again after being successfully revived in 2024 following a year-long closure after the club was unable to secure enough volunteers to continue operating.

Since reopening, the club has received an overwhelmingly positive response from the local community, with strong enrolment numbers and a fantastic group of volunteers stepping forward to help. Operating from the local school hall, the club offers Kiwi Fun Gym sessions for children aged 5 to 11, providing a fun, active environment where young people can develop confidence, coordination, strength and new friendships.

The club is currently run by a dedicated committee of five volunteers who work behind the scenes to keep everything operating smoothly. Weekly sessions are coordinated and delivered by Secretary Kylie, whose commitment, planning and organisation have been instrumental in the club’s success over the past two years and another successful season this year.

Seeking new people to be involved

However, as the children of some current volunteers move on from the club, Mercury Bay Gymnastics is now seeking new people to become involved in 2027.

Current Club President Sarah Old says the club’s future depends on finding one or two people willing to help lead the next chapter.

“We’ve worked incredibly hard and it’s been wonderful to see so many local children enjoying gymnastics. We don’t want to see another valuable community club disappear simply because there aren’t enough people available to help.”

The committee is seeking either someone interested in taking over the overall coordination of the club, or a small team of volunteers who could share responsibility for running weekly sessions and planning activities.

No previous gymnastics experience is necessary, and full training and support will be provided.

The current committee members, including Kylie and Sarah, will help with the transition and ensuring new volunteers feel confident and supported.

“This is such a valuable opportunity for local children,” says Sarah. “Gymnastics teaches so many different skills and gives kids a chance to be active, challenge themselves and have fun,” says Sarah.  “We’d love to hear from anyone who might be interested in helping us keep the club running for years to come.”

Mercury Bay Gymnastics Club hopes that by raising awareness now, interested volunteers will have plenty of time to learn the ropes before the 2027 season begins.

Anyone interested is encouraged to get in touch by emailing mercurybaygymclub@gmail.com or by sending a message through the club’s Facebook page. Even a small amount of help can make a huge difference.
